14th December 1911 - Roald Amundsen reaches the South Pole
14th December 1911
was the date that Norwegian Roald Amundsen arrived at the South Pole - the first man and team to do so.
In 1930 my Father, an Engineering Officer then with Blue Star Line on ARANDORA STAR, visited Kings Bay in Spitzbergen and saw a local child with 'Jacob', one of Amundsen's sleigh dogs. This is one of the pictures in my Father's collection, together with a picture of the Memorial to the 1925 Expedition, and I like knowing that 'the hand of history' continues to link us to very special events.
